Trainer Tips
Q: When/why would you use this snuffle mat?
Nose work is a fantastic activity for any dog that needs mental stimulation. In fact, what really makes your dog tired on walks is all the sniffing they do. (So mom and dad please be patient!) Nose work also builds confidence through learning how to problem solve and helps your dog with positive pairing or conditioning. All dogs can benefit from using a Snuffle Mat! I especially love using them mid-day with puppies under the age of 6 months to keep their minds processing on days where it is more challenging to go outside. I also love using the Snuffle Mat to work on crate conditioning and believe it or not, conditioning to the bath tub. Placing the mat inside the crate with treats on it, or inside a dry bath tub can teach your pup that a crate or the tub is a fun place to hang out.
Q: What type of treats would you use with this snuffle mat?
The more crumbly the treat the better for this "pawsome" mat! You want to use treats that are small, so that they can ‘hide’ in the mat. My favorite Fig & Tyler treats to use are their food toppers. Most dogs will lie on top of the mat and continue to nuzzle in until they get that last speck of duck liver. Not only are the food toppers high value, but they will really get your pup's nose working which...you guessed it...makes them even more tired! A tired dog is a happy dog!
